Why Your Home's Indoor Air Quality Matters

March 25, 2020

The worldwide growth of COVID-19 has likely shifted your daily calendar into a jumble.

When times feel uncertain, you can take peace in knowing your house is your safe area. You’re likely spending more time there today. That’s why your indoor air quality is now more important than ever.

Were you aware we can install indoor air quality products in your home that provide hospital-grade filtration? These products can eliminate bacteria from your air, as well as allergens, odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Today’s houses are firmly airtight, which is good for energy efficiency. But it also means your home’s air could be worse than the air outside. In fact, the EPA says it can be two to five times worse than outdoors. This can lead to issues, since we spend about 90% of our lifetime in a building.

There are many things that can cause poor indoor air quality, such as cleaning products and air fresheners. These might create headaches and exasperate allergies and asthma.

There are a few steps you can take to better your air quality. Some include upgraded air filters, an air purification system or an ultraviolet (UV) germicidal light.

Unsure which solution is best for your residence? Our skilled techs can perform an indoor air quality audit. Based on our findings, we can then advise you on the most fitting choice for your home’s distinctive needs.

Keep on reading to learn more about the air quality products we offer.

Air Filtration

When looking at air filters, you should consider the MERV rating, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This assesses how successfully it filters contaminants.

One of the most ordinary and least expensive filters, flat fiberglass filters, are graded between 1 and 4 on the MERV system. Pleated filters are slightly better, rated between 8 and 12.

We advise buying at least a MERV 13, such as the HC13 Media Air Cleaner, for the most ideal effect. This filter gives cleaner air while reducing energy consumption*.

High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are considered the gold standard in air filtration, since they’re typically in use at in hospitals. They’re effective at trapping 99.97–99.99% of indoor pollutants, such as pollen, pet dander and smoke.

Air Purification

Lennox® provides some of the greatest air purification equipment you can get. PureAir™ S and Healthy Climate™ PureAir Air Purification Systems offer hospital-grade filtration while taking care of all types of indoor air contaminants.

This powerful equipment can eliminate:

  • 99.9% of allergens, including pollen, dust and pet dander
  • 95% of bacteria-sized particles, including ones that lead to strep throat
  • 50% of VOCs and odors within 24 hours

UV Germicidal Lights

A UV germicidal light is placed within your HVAC unit. Its powerful rays eradicate bacteria and mold within seconds.

If your family suffers from allergies or asthma, this unit might give relief. Especially if you are in an extremely hot area where bacteria and mold thrive.

This light also offers an added advantage for your HVAC system. It could help it last for a longer period of time and heat and cool more efficiently, as it keeps the internal components clean.

Our air quality engineers advise installing one of these lights with an enhanced filter, such as our Carbon Clean 16® Media Air Cleaner, for optimal outcome. This filter offers industry-leading MERV 16 filtration combined with carbon-coated fibers to trap particles in your home’s air. It does all of this without decreasing your heating and cooling system’s airflow.

Whole-Home Humidifiers

Having correct humidity in your residence can help keep your loved ones from getting sick in the winter months. It can assist with sore throats, itchy skin and chapped lips, amidst other cold weather annoyances.

If you aren’t sure of what your house’s humidity range is, we’ll figure that out while we perform your indoor air quality audit. While the range fluctuates based off of outdoor temperatures, HVAC professionals usually advise keeping it between 40–60 percent.

You can reach this optimal range by using a whole-home humidifier. This unit usually accompanies your furnace or air handler to deliver optimum humidity throughout your house. Some units, like the Healthy Climate® Whole-Home Power Humidifier, use an incorporated fan to spread humidity when your comfort unit isn’t on.

*Based on in-duct testing that shows Healthy Climate® filters reduce airflow restriction. Greater restriction of airflow creates a greater load on a unit’s fan motor, increasing energy consumption.
