Is it Cheaper to Leave Your AC on All Day in the Summer?

June 19, 2020

As the heat increases, so does your energy expenses. To keep your air conditioning expenses under control you could be thinking, is it cheaper to leave your AC on all day in the summer in Anchorage?

It’s a widespread belief that turning your air conditioner on and off throughout the day is a waste of energy. This is actually a misconception.

Keeping your air conditioning on all day means you’re not using it very efficiently. We advise moving your thermostat to a higher setting when you’re elsewhere, and turning it down when you get back. You can do this with a programmable thermostat. Or, a smart thermostat is able to do the work for you.

It’s considerably more work for your system to keep a constant temperature throughout the day. It can also result in a lot of strain on your equipment, since it’s constantly turning on and off.

So, on top of it increasing your energy bills, it can also cause a reduced life cycle for your HVAC system.

Regardless, the bigger the difference between your house’s temperature and the outside temperature, the more your air conditioning bills will be. So, what can you do to stay cool and keep your electric bills down in the summer season? Here are our suggestions based off of recommendations from the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) and ENERGY STAR®.

6 Methods to Enhance Your Air Conditioner’s Energy Efficiency

  1. Adjust Your Temperature. The DOE states that you can conserve up to 10% a year on heating and cooling by turning up your thermostat 7-10 degrees when you’re away. In the summer months, it’s recommended to set your thermostat at 78 degrees when you’re home and 88 degrees when you’re away. It’s equally as important to avoid setting your thermostat to a lower setting than normal when you turn on your air conditioner. This doesn’t actually cool your house any faster, it just results in bigger electric bills. While these temperatures could feel toasty, there are a number of ways to keep comfortable without having to constantly run the AC unit.
  2. Utilize Fans, Curtains and Blinds. ENERGY STAR says turning up the thermostat by just 2 degrees and turning on your ceiling fan can lessen air conditioning costs by up to 14% over the course of the warmer months. It’s important to remember that fans cool people, not rooms. So, when you leave the room, turn the fan off to conserve energy. Additionally, keeping blinds low and curtains shut for the duration of the day helps keep cooler air inside. There are also some window solutions made to deliver added insulation and enhance energy efficiency.
  3. Properly Seal All Doors, Windows and Openings. Leaky cracks around a house enable cooler air to rapidly slip out and warmer air to get in. This can lead to your air conditioner having to work harder to keep your house cooler and your AC bills to climb. Check that any cracks, doors and windows are adequately sealed. Caulking or weather-stripping are easy solutions for leaks or drafts close to windows and doors.
  4. Plan for Routine Maintenance. Scheduling air conditioner maintenance assures that your air conditioner is always running at its most energy efficient. This lets our pro to spot little issues before they result in significant dilemmas. A well-kept AC is generally more efficient and may even live for a longer period of time.
  5. Install a Smart Thermostat. One of the best approaches to ensure comfort and energy savings is with a smart thermostat. This thermostat instinctively changes the temperature based on your daily schedule. It works together with your smartphone to see when you’re in your home or gone to maximize your energy savings. In fact, ENERGY STAR says that a smart thermostat could actually save you about $180 annually on HVAC expenses.
  6. Consider Replacing Your Air Conditioner. You can anticipate an adequately cared for AC unit to run for 15-20 years. But if you’re often needing us for air conditioning repair or your AC costs are skyrocketing with no shifts in thermostat settings, it might be time for an upgrade. We carry many energy-efficient air conditioners, including ENERGY STAR models that can help you save more on cooling without bargaining comfort.
